History

Mattel was created in 1945 by the couple Ruth and Elliot Handler. The
name comes from the union of the initials of Elliot and his partner
Harold Matson, who was better known as Matt. So the nickname Matt plus
the two first letters of Elliot became MATTEL.

The enterprise was one of the main manufacturers of toys but it did not
take off until 1959 when Ruth came up with the idea of replacing little
dolls made of paper by the very well known Barbie doll. She named the
doll Barbie as her daughter. That very same year, Barbie doll was
introduced in the market of toys in New York, and it was a total
success. Soon after, Barbie's friends appeared: in 1961 Ken (brother of
Barbie in the real life), in 1963 Midge, in 1965 Skipper and in 1968
Christie.

However, Barbie was not the only Mattel success, in fact, other toys
were realeased in the market, such as Hot Wheels, which are model cars.
They appeared in 1968 and in 1988 Disney brand was added for kids with
an arragement to be distribuited worldwide. So Mickey, Donald, Goofy
(Tribilin) and Pluto joined the company. Later on, movies of Disney
were part of the family, including "The Beauty and the Beast", "Aladin",
"The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "Hercules" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"

In the following years, Mattel became leader selling Fisher Prices products,
that was one of the most important brand for kids. Fisher Prices was older
than Mattel, and put more enfasis on teaching children and in the cuality
of toys for kids under six years old.

In 1997 MATTEL merged with TYCO and they add more toys for kids such as
products from Sesamo Street and View Master.

Characters

The creator of Barbie was Ruth Handler, who with her husband Elliot, co-founded Mattel, Inc. Barbie was named after the Handler’s daughter, Barbie. Ruth Handler was inspired by three smutty Lilli dolls she picked up in Europe in 1957. The Lilli dolls were modeled after a character in a German comic strip. Lilli was not a baby doll like most other dolls on the market in the 1950s.
